Health changes come first

Measure usable space

Plan accessible locations

Automatic boxes need exact instructions
Check the manual for every cat that may enter the unit, the required weight/age range, sensor conditions and compatible litter. The Litter-Robot 4 getting-started guide, for example, specifies at least 3 lb for automatic operation and lists litter restrictions. That threshold belongs to that model and is not approval for other machines.
Compare automatic litter boxes by the documented requirements and replacement supplies. Do not bypass sensors or assume that automatic cleaning removes the need for observation and maintenance.
Litter and care
Read the box and litter makers’ instructions together. “Plant-based,” “crystal” or “pellet” does not establish compatibility with every machine or sifting tray. Compare cat litter by the exact product. Follow the specified fill level, cleaning and disposal directions; a category name is not permission to flush used litter.
Count ongoing costs
- Record the selected box and delivered price.
- Record compatible litter and replacement bags, trays or filters.
- Check consumable availability and cleaning access.
